What is Cryotherapy and How Does it Work?

Cryotherapy is a treatment that uses extreme cold to target and remove unwanted skin lesions. By applying nitrous oxide directly to the affected area, the rapid freezing process causes the water within the cells to crystallise, leading to controlled destruction of the unwanted tissue. Over the following days, the treated area naturally heals as the body eliminates the damaged cells. This precise technique ensures that surrounding healthy tissue remains unaffected, making Cryotherapy a highly effective and safe option for skin lesion removal.

  • A history of keloid scarring.
  • Circulatory disorders or poor wound healing.

Concerns Treated with Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is an ideal solution for the removal of various superficial skin concerns, including:

  • Milia – Small, white cysts that commonly appear around the eyes and cheeks.
  • Skin Tags – Soft, flesh-colored growths that often form in skin folds.
  • Age Spots – Darkened patches of skin caused by sun exposure and ageing.
  • Pigmentation – Uneven skin tone, including freckles and sunspots.
  • Cherry Angioma – Small, red, benign growths made up of blood vessels.
  • Warts & Verrucae – Viral skin lesions that can be stubborn and contagious.

Cryotherapy faqs

Most patients experience a cold or stinging sensation during treatment, but this is brief and well-tolerated.

Treatment typically lasts only a few minutes per lesion.

In many cases, one session is sufficient, but larger or more stubborn lesions may require a follow-up treatment.

The treated area may darken and form a small scab before healing over the next 7-14 days. Some mild redness or swelling may be present but will subside quickly.

Once removed, most lesions do not return. However, certain conditions like warts or pigmentation may recur due to underlying causes.

We recommend keeping the treated area clean and dry, avoiding picking at the scab, and applying sunscreen to prevent pigmentation changes.
